Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located?
We're at the corner of 20th and G Streets NW. Our church is easily accessible by foot, car, Metrorail, or Metrobus. Street parking is typically available on Sunday mornings. No matter how you travel, there's a simple way to get to The United Church. MAP

What door do I use?
The main entrance on Sunday mornings is on G Street.

How do I join online?
We use a Zoom meeting and please contact us for the link.

Do you have Coffee Hour?
Yes! There is coffee hour after each worship service. For German speakers and those who want to practice their German, the coffee hour following our German Language Worship Services is an excellent time for fellowship in German.

Are children welcome?
Absolutely! We love having families worship together in the service. Also, there is a children’s space just off the sanctuary if you would like to use it.

What is a typical worship service like?
Each service is approximately 60 minutes and includes singing, prayers, Bible readings, and a sermon. The English service celebrates Holy Communion every month on the first Sunday and the German service celebrates Holy Communion periodically throughout the year.

Will I be able to take Holy Communion?
Yes! We have an open table. The Communion table belongs to God, not to us. All are welcome.

Do you have gluten-free communion elements?
Yes! Please ask a communion server for gluten-free.

Does communion have wine or grape juice?
Both wine and grape juice are available during the German service and grape juice is used during the English service.

What should I wear?
Clothes, definitely wear clothes. All joking aside, you will see people wearing business, business casual and casual attire. You might be headed from the gym or headed to an afternoon at the theater, so please come as you are comfortable.

How do I become a member?
If you have been attending and are interested in joining, please contact Rev. Dr. Juni Hoppe (German Language service) or Rev. T.C. Morrow (English Language service) to learn about joining the church.

What denomination is the church affiliated with?
The United Church is affiliated with both The United Church of Christ and The United Methodist Church. In 1975, Concordia United Church of Christ and Union United Methodist Church merged into The United Church. Concordia German Evangelical Church (Deutsche Concordia-Kirche) formed in 1833 to serve the growing German immigrant community in Washington, DC. In 1845, Union Methodist Episcopal Church was formed by Methodists located a mile east in order to better serve what are today the Foggy Bottom and West End neighborhoods. The congregation now meets in the former Concordia church building.
