During the original Advent, as Mary was expecting the birth of her baby, she sang the great song of liberation from all oppression, the song known as the Magnifcat.
"Magnificat" is the literal Latin, for "magnifies", and refers to the first line of Mary's song---"my soul magnifies the Lord."
As Mary magnified Love Itself, it arrived in the form of the Baby Jesus. Jesus went on to be constantly conscious of God, Love Itself", seeing Love everywhere, beneath all the sorts and conditions of Life. This seeing, this beholding, brought Heaven to Earth. This shift in perspective demonstrated Love to be the very substance and foundation of all that is.
This shift in perspective, this beholding of Love, is what all of us are called to do---restoring, healing, transforming all that is not Love into Love. It takes practice. We find that as we magnify the presence of God, we get caught up in the details; the small things of our lives that seem to separate us from our birthright of "precious, sacred and beloved." Perhaps we can, this Advent season, realize that as we consciously magnify Love in the everyday stuff, Earth becomes Heaven, the lion lies down with the lamb, all tears are wiped away, and the suffering of the world ends. That is a very high bar! Yet, beginning with the small things, eventually all things become beacons of peace and good will for all.
With Grace and Blessings, Rev. Bill
